Memorial Hermann Layoffs

Memorial Hermann has announced the layoffs of 112 employees. The reduction represents less than 1 percent of Memorial Hermann's 25,000-employee workforce and affects mostly people in leadership positions. On a more positive note, a spokeswoman for Memorial Hermann emphasized the reduction is more about restructuring and that the Memorial Hermann Health System has 1,800 vacant positions due to a new hospital opening in Cypress in March and the expansion of the Humble campus later this year.

M.D. Anderson Layoffs

'Budgetary issues and significant operating losses led M.D. Anderson to lay off 800-900 workers the second week into the new year.

M.D. Anderson cut overtime and contract personnel and dissolved positions vacated by retirees and employees who had resigned.  Additional savings will come from 100-200 employees expected to retire within the year, and the hospital will not refill those positions. No doctors or clinical nurses were affected by this massive layoff, and the institution does not foresee more cuts in 2017.

Other healthcare entities are taking advantage of the surge in unemployed experienced healthcare workers.  The University of Texas Medical Branch is reviewing their open requisitions and working to fill as many of their openings as possible with the talent from M.D. Anderson.  Houston Methodist in The Woodlands is hiring over 200 healthcare workers, and Texas Children's Hospital has over 150 openings they are trying to fill.

If you have an employer who would like to take advantage of the surge in available healthcare talent in the Gulf Coast region, please contact Business Consultant Sean Morris via phone at
713-661-3220 or by email at Sean.Morris@wrksolutions.com
