Our Region is Full of Talent!

There is simply no denying that Computer Systems Design and Related Services is an industry that is booming!  The Houston Chronicle recently published a story highlighting the fact that companies are flowing out of Silicon Valley and into the great Lone Star State.

Texas is particularly attractive to new companies, or those that are looking to expand their operations due to the lower cost of living and the tax benefits of doing business here.  Aside from being the 4th largest city in the nation with unparalleled proximity to both the east and the west coasts, the Houston area is home to the second largest population of Engineers - second only to, you guessed it, Silicon Valley - not to mention, we are simply the best!

Did you know that there are currently 6,593 active job-seekers in WIT identified as having experience in computer occupations with an average of 8 years of experience? INCREDIBLE!  So, next time you find yourself speaking about the economic benefits of doing business in Texas, don't forget to mention that our Gulf Coast Region is where the talent is!

How to Eliminate (or Handle) Stress at Work

Projects.  Meetings.  Events.  Conference calls.  Goals.  Deadlines.  It's all part of life in the office, and all of those things can be significant sources of stress.  Forbes recently published an article that states on average, we have 30 to 100 projects on our plates at any given time, coupled with being interrupted an average of 7 times per hour; it's no wonder we can all feel stressed out from time to time.

After a stressful day (or week) we consciously know we need to unwind.  We will usually say it to a friend, spouse, or a co-worker by hitting happy hour, lighting candles and soaking in the tub, or just zoning out, thankful for a little peace and quiet, but is it enough?

Stress, be it long-term or short-term, can have many effects on your body.  Stress causes your brain to release cortisol, which is known to cause cravings for sugary and fatty foods.  Stress can also cause your body to store fat, not a great combination, is it?  From insomnia and headaches to high blood pressure and heart attacks, stress needs to be taken seriously, and there are ways to avoid (or deal with) it in the workplace.  Here's just a few:

  • Experts say taking a deep breath when you are feeling overwhelmed can clear your head and restore balance.  5 seconds in through the nose, 5 seconds out through the nose.  Simple enough.
  • Eating foods high in fat or sugar will stress out your body so stick to high protein foods and choose to eat smaller meals throughout the day, rather than a big mid-day meal (plus, you'll avoid that late afternoon crash.)
  • Make sure you are getting enough sleep.  This is your body's recovery time, so if you aren't getting enough rest, you're coming into the day already stressed out.  If your mind is racing and you can't seem to turn your brain off, there's an old trick you can try - Cover your right nostril and breathe through the left one for 3 - 5 minutes.  It'll knock you right out.  (This is good advice from a medical doctor, not our Grandmother.)
  • Prioritize your priorities.  Seems simple enough, doesn't it?  Not when competing deadlines and new projects keep coming at you any given moment of the day.  So many times our to-do lists are the culprits of stress, but more often than not it's because we put the pressure on ourselves to do it all right now, this second.  Review your list on a regular basis and re-prioritize it.  It won't always be first in, first out.  It's up to you to understand the scope of your projects and to effectively communicate a change in plans to those around you.  I've never met a co-worker that was upset with me for a slight delay in their project when the CEO asked me for something for a Board Meeting that afternoon, have you?

We will all feel the stress, but we have the ability to handle it, and to make sure it isn't dictating our moods or impacting our health.  Sure, the projects, meetings, events, conference calls, reviews, and deadlines will always be a part of our everyday lives.  However, we are a fortunate few that get to say helping the community we live in, changing lives, and putting Texans back to work is also a part of our everyday lives.  Stay healthy, stay happy.
