Meet Edward Melton: Connecting the Dots From Literacy to Careers

For Edward Melton, libraries have always been about more than books. Over a 25-year career in library and literacy services, he has seen firsthand how access to technology, education and information can open doors for people at every stage of life.

Melton is the library director for Harris County Public Library, where he has worked for 11 years. He began his career with a nonprofit organization that helped put computers and networks in libraries at a time when technology access was still limited. His career later took him to Houston Public Library and San Francisco Public Library before returning to Harris County.

That experience is part of what led Melton to serve on the Gulf Coast Workforce Board. He saw an opportunity to serve the community in a larger capacity while helping connect people with services that can support their careers and participation in the workforce.

“Really a couple of things that inspire me to work on this board,” Melton said, pointing to the opportunity to expand access to services and career opportunities.

His work on the Board includes serving on the Education Committee and Career Services Committee. Through both, he is interested in making sure people not only have access to resources, but know those resources are available to them.

For Melton, that work begins early. Through education and early literacy initiatives, he sees an opportunity to help children enter school prepared to learn while also supporting families who need child care so they can work.

“Really making connecting the dots in terms of connecting people who may not be engaged or might not have opportunity to opportunities that’s going to enhance and change their lives,” he said.

That perspective reflects the connection Melton sees between early childhood development, family support and the workforce. Investments made early can help children build the skills they need for school while helping families navigate the demands of work and child care.

Outside of his work with the library and the Board, Melton enjoys spending time outdoors. He describes himself as a “country boy” at heart and likes yard work, hiking and fishing. Although, when it comes to fishing, he admits his son is usually the one doing the fishing while he watches.

For Melton, being outdoors is also about growth and development—whether that means growing something in the yard, exploring nature or simply spending time with his family. It is a fitting reflection of the perspective he brings to his work: creating access, supporting development and helping people find opportunities to move forward.
