Gulf Coast Workforce Board Teacher Internship
Building the Next Generation of Educators Through Real-World Experience
The Gulf Coast Workforce Board (GCWB), the largest workforce board in Texas, is launching the Educator Internship Initiative, a forward‑thinking program designed to better connect educator preparation with the fast‑evolving needs of the regional labor market. Serving 25% of Texas’ total workforce across 14,000 square miles and 13 counties, GCWB has long been committed to helping people get jobs, keep jobs, and build careers. This initiative extends that mission into the educator pipeline, ensuring that future teachers enter the classroom equipped with the skills, experiences, and real‑world context needed to support student success.
Addressing a Critical Need
At the heart of the program is a commitment to aligning education with industry. By investing in early teacher preparation, the internship addresses a pressing statewide challenge: a growing shortage of certified, well‑prepared educators. In recent years, nearly half of new teachers in Houston began their careers uncertified, contributing to gaps in student achievement, particularly in math. The Educator Internship Initiative takes a proactive approach, providing aspiring teachers with meaningful, hands‑on experience that strengthens instructional skills and prepares them to meet the needs of today’s classrooms.
Program Partners
To deliver this high‑impact opportunity, GCWB is partnering with iEducate, Region 6 Education Service Center, and Sam Houston State University’s College of Education. Together, these organizations bring a powerful blend of expertise in workforce development, educator preparation, and instructional innovation. Junior‑year education majors at Sam Houston State University will participate in paid, on‑the‑job internships through iEducate, serving as math tutors and intervention specialists in school districts across the region. This model allows university students to develop essential teaching skills while making an immediate difference in student learning.
Proven Results
iEducate’s proven track record reinforces the strength of this approach. Since 2013, the organization has engaged more than 1,000 college students as high‑impact tutors, improving outcomes for over 87,000 elementary students. Nearly all partner teachers report accelerated student growth, and interns consistently describe the experience as a turning point in their journey toward becoming educators. Region 6 ESC will further support the initiative by providing skill development, feedback, and quality oversight, ensuring consistency and excellence across all internship placements.
Strengthening the Regional Workforce
The Gulf Coast Educator Internship Initiative not only bolsters individual career readiness but also strengthens the broader regional workforce system. Education is one of the Gulf Coast’s highest‑priority industries, projected to grow significantly in the coming years. Well trained teachers are essential to building a strong talent pipeline and supporting long‑term economic resilience across the region. By connecting university students with real‑world classroom experience and aligning preparation programs with employer needs, GCWB is advancing its vision of a region where opportunity and prosperity are accessible to all.
