Wesley Community Center, a nonprofit serving Houston’s Near Northside, helps individuals take their first steps into healthcare careers through a combination of training, financial support, and career placement.

A Starting Point for Job Seekers

For many individuals, the biggest barrier to entering a new career isn’t motivation: it’s preparation. That’s something Wesley Community Center has spent the last decade addressing head-on.

“We know that healthcare is a growing and strong industry, and a lot of our clients are interested in that area,” said Amy Corron, President and CEO of Wesley Community Center.

Many participants arrive needing to strengthen foundational skills before stepping into technical training. That’s where Wesley’s “bridge classes” come in.

These six-week courses, held Monday through Thursday, focus on essential academic skills like reading, writing, and math—all tailored to healthcare settings. On Fridays, the focus shifts to workplace readiness, including communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution.

From Training to Career

After completing the bridge program, Wesley provides scholarships that cover tuition, books, and certification costs for vocational training programs at local colleges like Houston City College and Lone Star College.

Graduates are connected with major healthcare employers, including Memorial Hermann and Houston Methodist, helping them transition from training into stable, career-track jobs.

Training for In-Demand Healthcare Jobs

With guidance from labor market data provided by Workforce Solutions, Wesley has identified four high-demand career paths that offer strong earning potential and growth opportunities:

• Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN)
• Pharmacy Technician
• Sterile Processing Technician
• Medical Assistant

These roles not only meet current workforce needs—they also offer clear pathways for advancement within the healthcare field.

A Holistic Approach to Career Success

What sets Wesley’s program apart is its focus beyond just job training. Each participant receives personalized coaching that looks at the full picture, from career goals to financial stability.

“So we really want to help people to become financially stable, so we look at them holistically when they come in, and we help them talk through their goals and their aspirations and their dreams.”

This includes support with budgeting, credit, and identifying additional resources such as childcare or healthcare benefits—services that can make a critical difference in a person’s ability to complete training and maintain employment.

Wesley offers a range of supportive services, including:

• On-site childcare and after-school care
• Financial support during training
