MAY 2009 UPDATE:
NEXT UPDATE: WEEK OF JULY 20
May 2009 employment data was released on June 19, 2009, for the Gulf Coast region.
The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown MSA’s over-the-year job growth was -2.2 percent in May, declining by 56,300 jobs since May 2008. This was the largest over-the-year decline for the Houston metro area since April 1987, when 59,200 jobs (-3.8%) were lost over the year. Last year at this time, the area added 67,900 jobs, or 2.7 percent over the previous year. Government and Educational & Health Services were the two major industry groups adding the most positions, up 6,800 and 6,700 jobs respectively from May 2008. Professional & Business Services was down 18,900 jobs from this time last year. Construction and Manufacturing were also down considerably from May 2008.
The thirteen county region’s unemployment rate was 6.9 percent, up from the 4.4 percent rate of May 2008.
